To assist MOS members in taking an active role in the conservation of birds and bird habitats, the following list provides links to websites that make it easy to contact appropriate officials. You can also join their mailing lists for timely e-mail alerts. Please keep in mind that the views represented by these websites are not necessarily those of the MOS, MOS Executive Board, or the MOS Board of Directors. A description of some of these sites is available.

Maryland League of Conservation Voters (www.mdlcv.org): MLCV serves as the political voice of the state's environmental community by advocating for sound conservation policies, promoting environmentally responsible candidates, and holding elected officials accountable through scorecards and reports. MLCV is currently handling such issues as protecting Program Open Space, and supporting the Stormwater Management and the Clean Cars Acts.

Chesapeake Bay Foundation (www.cbf.org): The CBF fights for strong and effective laws and regulations to protect and restore the Bay. They work cooperatively with government, business and citizens and will use legal means to force compliance with local laws. For example, this past year, the CBF lead the successful grassroots fight to preserve a large portion of sensitive land in Dorchester County (adjacent to the Little Blackwater River and the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge) proposed for intensive residential and commercial development, known as the Blackwater Resort Communities.

National Audubon Society (www.audubon.org):Audubon's mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habits for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity. Issues are addressed at the national and international level, rather than locally. Current advocacy campaigns include renewable energy, restoring wetlands, and threats to the Artic Refuge, among many others. Under their Issues & Actions/Take Action Now! tab, they provide a useful tool to easily access contact information (address and email) about your local and federal representatives. Just provide your zipcode to obtain this information, as well as to gain access to an instant email message platform.
